1 John 3:21 – Beloved, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have boldness toward God; and whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.
One of the things that makes us exceptionally bold when we come before God is a forgiven and clean heart. Sometimes we can find that our ‘hearts condemn us’ – we come to God and ask, but our hearts are saying to us ‘You’re in sin… God won’t listen’.
This is why 1 John 3:19 says we should ‘persuade our hearts before Him’. Fully receiving God’s forgiveness and cleansing means teaching and persuading our heart that we have God’s favour – by faith and not by feeling. This can take time, and our hearts can really need some strong persuasion!
But when we enter the place that our hearts are ‘fully persuaded’ – we get a great boldness toward God, and we start asking… and receiving!
If you find your ‘heart is condemning you’ today – start reminding your heart of the truth – 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”.
