Holding On

James 1:6-7 – But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed.  For let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord.

A double-minded person is a person who is wavering between two paths and can’t or won’t commit to either one.  When we live this way, we become like a wave of the sea – tossed around and blown about from one thing to another.

In this is a strong warning – “let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord”.  This is NOT because God is holding out on the person and demanding their commitment before He releases His promise.

On the contrary, the reason that a doubting, double-minded person will not receive anything from the Lord, is because to RECEIVE something from God, you have to TAKE it and HOLD ON to it.  God continues to stand in our life – arms outstretched, hands holding all that we need.  The doubting, double-minded person takes what God has for a moment, but then drops it, and takes something else instead – and in the process they end up NOT RECEIVING what God has for them.  It it not God who withholds, rather it is they who withdraw.

If you have the slightest inkling that something may be of God – HOLD ON TO IT!  The best way to learn to follow His leading is to be careful to honour the smallest task or tug that appears to have it’s origin in the throne.  When we hold on to His promise, and stay true to His course – we move from being a blown-about wave to a having a blowing-away life!
